The internet works in a strange way. Each time your reply to an online comment, you are fuelling its popularity. This is because you are introducing new material on the same topic.
The search engines, and in particular Google give priority to ‘live’ issues which means that each time a comment is being added to a thread, it helps the thread to climb up the search engines’ ladder, which ironically is exactly the opposite of the result that you would want to achieve.
Furthermore, (and this is from my experience as a soldier) if you treat the internet as a reputation battlefield, you will need to make sure that you are at least as familiar and vested with the secrets of the internet as your opponents. Many internet offenders have a great advantage over their victims. The offenders tend to be very familiar with the technicalities which make things happen on the internet which means they know the battlefield very well. Many of their victims on the other hands are not familiar with the same which means they can very rarely win.
But I am not going to leave you just with bad news. Many victims of internet defamation feel that ‘the internet makes it impossible to hide’. However, this means that the offenders cannot hide either. We always smoke them out.
